JPEG and JPG are the same format. The shorter spelling is a leftover from MS-DOS, which limited file extensions to three characters, and it stuck.
Whichever extension your files use, converting to WebP typically saves a quarter to a half of the file size at equivalent quality. The gain comes from WebP’s better spatial prediction and entropy coding — JPEG’s design dates to 1992 and spends bits inefficiently on exactly the smooth gradients that dominate most photographs.
Frequently asked questions
- Is JPEG different from JPG?
- No. They are the same format with two spellings. The three-letter version survives from MS-DOS, which allowed only three-character extensions. Any tool that handles one handles the other, and so does this one.
- How much smaller is WebP than JPEG?
- Around 25-50% for typical photographs at equivalent perceived quality. Smooth areas such as skies and blurred backgrounds compress hardest; dense detail like foliage or textured fabric compresses least.
- Does this reduce image quality?
- At the default quality of 82 the difference is very hard to see at normal viewing size. Use the Compare view to check any individual image — it puts the original and the converted version under a draggable split so you can judge it yourself rather than take our word for it.
- Can I convert a whole folder at once?
